“For as long as I have lived, I have always been passionate about outdoor sports,” says Michael Martel, Co-CEO and CTO of Beonyx. “It started with me riding bikes and skis when I was very young and evolved into a career in motocross and then pro supermoto racing, where I became a two-time Canadian champion.”

Michael’s life has been spent in motion, and his journey didn’t stop at racing. Alongside his athletic pursuits, he completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering. “The objective was always to simultaneously make my passion for mechanical vehicles a professional career,” he explains. This dedication to sport and engineering laid the foundation for what would come.

In 2013, Michael noticed that mountain biking was transforming. “Mountain bike trails and bikes had evolved tremendously and were experiencing a steep popularity growth. I immediately wanted to be part of it,” he recalls. He immersed himself in the sport, volunteering to help local resorts build trails. This experience exposed him to the demanding tasks of trail construction and sparked a new idea: “I started wondering if I could help them with my engineering skills.”

This curiosity led him to join a company in the electric all-terrain market, where he honed his skills over eight years. However, in 2023, seeking a new challenge, he left to work closely with trail-building crews and test products that didn’t meet expectations. “I had a breakthrough and started conceptualizing a perfect product for extreme terrain mobility,” Michael says. This realization inspired him and his partner, Louis, to launch Beonyx Robotics in the summer of 2023.

“To blow off steam, I kept riding across Quebec with my brother,” Michael continues. As they explored trails, they noticed a gap: “Most mountain bike resorts in Québec don’t have any way to bring riders to the top of the mountain.” This insight led to the creation of the Beonyx B1 shuttle, designed to transport up to ten riders to the summit.

“I’m passionate about mountain biking, and I now use my engineering skills to help trail builders develop and maintain trails faster,” Michael adds. “At the same time, we help riders access the top of the mountain much more easily. This is where a passion becomes a business when you help people.”

Michael’s journey with Beonyx is part of a larger movement toward sustainable mobility.
